Iwatani to Liquefy and Import Hydrogen from Renewable Energy
On November 27, Iwatani announced that it agreed and entered into discussions with an Australian power company for the business to liquefy and import hydrogen derived from a renewable energy of the Australian origin.
Iwatani concluded an agreement with Stanwell which is an electric power company run directly by the State of Queensland, Australia. Iwatani will produce carbon-free hydrogen derived from a renewable energy like sunlight and wind which Stanwell is working on and Iwatani will import it to Japan. The two companies are going to get partners with whom they practically start discussions and preparations to realize commercialization.
Iwatani has already participated in the project of a massive hydrogen supply chain for liquefied hydrogen from brown coal of Australian unused resource. At this time Iwatani is seeking a possibility of developing a large-scaled supply chain of hydrogen in collaboration with Stanwell of Queensland where there is abundant renewable energy power.
To realize a decarbonized society, a momentum toward the utilization of hydrogen energy is getting a rise all over the world. In Japan Prime Minister Suga made a policy speech to realize no CO2 emission in 2050 and people pay attention to hydrogen for use which does not accompany emission of CO2. Above all hydrogen derived from renewable energy draws attention as the hydrogen causing least the emission of CO2.
In the field of energy hydrogen like in the industrial use, Iwatani wishes to be an initiative player of supply chain. That is why Iwatani intends to procure positively such a hydrogen derived from renewable energy as at this time.
