NEDO Adopts 14 Projects of R&D to Utilize Hydrogen
On July 28, the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO) announced that it had adopted 14 projects for “Hydrogen Society Development Technology Project and Technical Development to Utilize Hydrogen Regionally” as the subsidized scheme for 2021.
In the adopted projects aiming to develop hydrogen society, they will implement researches and technical developments as to economical merits and greenhouse gas reducing effects in industrial complexes, ports and plants where a large-scale utilization of hydrogen would be expected.
The period to implement the projects is maximum two years until 2022 in the research fields on feasibility of a comprehensive energy system model which includes the production/storage/supply of hydrogen, and maximum five years until 2025 in the integrated technological development of energy system including the production and storage of hydrogen and also the complex utilization of hydrogen in the industrial park or port area.
In the adopted 14 projects as per the separate table, research and technical developments are made in each area
regarding hydrogen which is derived from renewable energy, imported hydrogen and the utilization of by-product hydrogen.
Air Water and Hokkaido Electric are starting their researches aiming to realize verification on the production of hydrogen utilizing the offshore wind power station at Ishikari Bay New Port which is scheduled to start operation from 2023.
In the Kawasaki Waterfront which is an industrial area centered by the petrochemical complex, ENEOS and others will make researches aiming to develop a supply model of CO2-free hydrogen.
In the Kansai Area Iwatani Corporation and Kansai Electric will produce CO2-free hydrogen utilizing Hydro Edge of liquid hydrogen plant and examine carbon recycling by methanization.
In the area around Shunan Industrial Complex of Yamaguchi Prefecture, TOKUYAMA and others will research for a large-scale hydrogen supply chain by by-product hydrogen. In addition, the candidate evaluation of receiving base of imported hydrogen from abroad will be made referring to the waterfront areas of the Kansai and Chubu Districts and implemented basing upon the outcome of examinations by the council of each area.
