SEMICON Japan 2021 Revived Real after Two Years
SEMICON JAPAN 2021 HYBRID of international exhibition of electronics production supply chain was held by SEMI starting from December 15 to 17, 2021 at Tokyo Big Sight and online.
In the exhibition site a total of 452 companies and organizations participated including semiconductor/ electronics parts manufacturers as well as related equipment manufacturers and municipalities.
From the gas-related field we saw a row of booths of major gas distributors like Tomoe Shokai and Toyoko Kagaku as well as equipment manufacturers like Fujikin, KITZ SCT, Horiba Stec, New Cosmos Electric, Pureron Japan, Yutaka, Kanken Techno and Nishimura Chemitech.
In the opening ceremony held on the morning of 15th, Prime Minister Fumio Kishida presented a video message and a lecture was made by Akira Amari (member of the House of Representatives) who is serving as chairman of the parliamentary union to promote a semiconductor strategy in the liberal democratic party.
Mr. Amari said in the speech, “As a strategy to adopt in the semiconductor field I point out the establishment of a production technology to assure a line width level of 10nm domestically and a production center of high-end logic taking advantage of the tie-up between Japan and USA. It will be necessary to make a public and private investment of ten trillion yen for a period of 10 years to come. We are aware that without drawing up a strategic chart of chronological order we would not be able to survive the international competition of semiconductor.”
For reference SEMI forecasted on the preceding day of the SEMICON that the world sales of semiconductor manufacturing equipment will amount to US$103 billion renewing the record for two consecutive years and predicting further growth in 2022. It also forecasts a thriving demand will remain growing.
As for the capital investments of the major domestic manufacturer after 2022, they forecast KIOXIA’s construction of 7th building of Yokkaichi Plant and 2nd building of Kitakami Plant, and expansions in Micron Memory Japan’s Higashi Hiroshima Plant and Sony Semiconductor Manufacturing’s Nagasaki Technology Center. It follows that Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing (TSMC) will build up its Kumamoto Plant which will become its first production center in Japan.
