TNSC Successfully Verifies H2 Production of FC Grade from Ammonia
Taiyo Nippon Sanso announced that it succeeded in the verification of producing the fuel cell vehicle (FCV) grade hydrogen which is derived from ammonia.
The successful verification this time was for the project to produce hydrogen in association of an ammonia decomposition furnace with the hydrogen purification equipment using the PSA system which Taiyo Nippon Sanso developed for itself.
As the result of the verification, it proved that the produced hydrogen satisfies the purity of 99.97% based on the ISO Standard (ISO 14687:2019 Grade D) required for the hydrogen fuel for FCV.
TNSC had been developing the fundamental technologies to supply ammonia-derived hydrogen to FCV applications in Cross-ministerial Strategic Innovation Promotion Program (SIP) of the Cabinet Office’s Council for Science Technology and Innovation from 2014 until 2018, and had already established hydrogen gas purifying system from a mixed gas simulating ammonia decomposition gas. In the mentioned technology, the company succeeded in developing the gas purifying technology by the 4-tower type PSA system.
In this verification test, the technological examinations have been made combining the ammonia decomposition furnace with the hydrogen purifying system which had been established with the know-how on hydrogen purification fostered in such past verifications.
TNSC comments, “ We now see the light at the end of the tunnel in the production of hydrogen from ammonia, and are going to commercialize it now.”
