Iwatani and Cosmo Opens Japan’s First H2 Station as Truck Terminal in Heiwajima, Tokyo
Iwatani Cosmo Hydrogen Station which is jointly run by Iwatani and Cosmo Energy HD opened Japan’s first hydrogen station as truck terminal named “Iwatani Cosmo H2 Station Heiwajima” in Keihin Truck Terminal located in Ota-ku, Tokyo. It will be a station to refuel hydrogen into the fuel cell-driven trucks which are anticipated to diffuse extensively from now on and will make the first attempt for the two companies now working in a collaborative business system related to the hydrogen energy business.
The newly opened station has been attached to “Keihin Truck Terminal Heiwajima SS” which is a gas station for the Cosmo Energy HD’s trucks in the Keihin Truck Terminal located in Heiwajima Ota-ku. The terminal is located at the location about 500m from the Heiwajima Interchange of Capital Freeway Haneda Line and boasts the largest cargo handling volume of Japan.
In the verification of FC trucks which is now carried out by the Commercial Japan Partnership Technologies (CJPT) consisting of mainly of automobile manufacturers it is planned to introduce about 190 small-type trucks and 50 large-type trucks in Tokyo and the station is expected to become an hydrogen refueling base for such FC trucks.
The site of the station including a refueling space has an area of 2,463m2 and a supply capacity of hydrogen will be 60kg/h (600Nm3/h or more). Two independent units of hydrogen dispenser will be equipped to refuel FCVs. In case of passenger cars and small-sized trucks, two vehicles can be refueled at one time. In order to refuel large-sized FC trucks, two refueling hoses are provided to match the fuel ports of such trucks. To supply hydrogen to the station an off-site type of 3-ton tank is adopted for the storage of liquid hydrogen. The hydrogen filling amount is about 30kg to refuel the large-sized truck under development, and is capable to store hydrogen for 100 vehicles of large-sized FC trucks.
In addition to the same differential pressure filling system as for the conventional hydrogen station, it adopts concurrently a direct refueling system to push out with a compressor. It enables to fully refuel one large-sized FC truck for about 10 minutes.
The station is operated by Kitaseki of Cosmo’s special agent. Though self-refueling is possible for business hours from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., they enter into sight to open all day and night to meet requests and demands.
They held an opening ceremony at the site on April 8.
President Hiroshi Majima representing of Iwatani as sponsor said in his greeting speech, “Iwatani and Cosmo HD are planning an extensive collaboration in the field of hydrogen and this development of station will make the first step of the plan.” He showed a positive wish saying, “As a hydrogen station requires a larger scale to cope with refueling of commercial vehicles, the procurement of land for further development is the biggest issue for infrastructure operators like us. We are going to correspond to the demand fusing Cosmo’s resources and our know-how fostered to operate H2 stations.”
President Shigeru Yamada of Cosmo HD said, “We wish to go ahead with development of the business while discussing a concurrent construction for the service stations to refuel the trucks of our own.”
Governor Koike of Tokyo addressed, “We are confident and expect that this station attached to Japan’s largest truck terminal will make the first step to support logistics using FC trucks. Tokyo metropolitan government intends to support the utilization of hydrogen energy in the mobility field by means of purchasing costs of FC trucks and the expenditure for infrastructure arrangements.”
