The methanation verifying facility which has been operated in Yokohama Techno Station of Tokyo Gas since March 2022 has now been authorized as “Clean Gas Production Facility” in the clean-gas-certificate system. It is the first case in Japan to authorize use of a methanation verifying facility.

The clean-gas-certificate system stands for the system to issues a certificate for an e-methane and biogases which are deemed by Japan Gas Appliances Inspection Association not to cause any increase of CO2 in the atmosphere even after combustion.

Only after the issuance of certificate through the recognition of appropriate volume produced in the facility authorized by Clean Gas Evaluation Committee it is possible to separate and remove an environmental value from the energetical value.

Tokyo Gas supplies the CO2 recovered jointly by Yokohama City and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries from the exhausted gas discharged at Tsurumi Plant of the municipal environment bureau (the amin adsorption method with a purity or more at 150Nm3) and also supply to the methanation facility (12.5N m3/h made by Hitachi Zosen) the green hydrogen which is produced in use of electrolysis equipment (300Nm3/h PEM-type) of ITM Power of UK installed in March this year. Then Tokyo Gas will start to produce e-methane. Regarding the e-methane to be produced in this year, Tokyo Gas is going to obtain recognition to satisfy some requirements for an appropriate volume as clean gas and will go ahead to utilize the environmental value transfer to realize carbon neutral.
