Chlorine dioxide used for disinfecting and deodorizing car

Taiko Pharmaceutical and Denso formed a partnership to develop a cartridge and gas generator to conduct disinfection and deodorization of cars in a very simple way by using chlorine dioxide.

Taiko Pharmaceutical has developed a technology in house which can preserve chlorine dioxide dissolved in a liquid or gel for a long period of time at a constant density. The product is called Cleverin® and went on sale in 2005. Chlorine dioxide has the ability to attack (oxidize) specific amino acids. It has the ability to eradicate viruses and bacteria as well as to remove odors.

According to Taiko Pharmaceutical, the automotive industry had been troubled for years by odors caused by cigarettes and sweat, as well as by air conditioners, all of which specifically pollute the interior of cars. Various methods have been tried to remove these, such as ozone deodorization and ion washing. However, the industry had not been able to find a deodorizing method which was both quick and efficient and which did not cost a great deal of money to implement.

To use the new method, a generator is placed right in the middle of the car, and a situation is maintained filled with chlorine dioxide gas for 15 minutes. This is then ventilated for 5 minutes. The total time required is therefore 20 minutes.
