SDK to supply hard disks for helium-filled HDD

Showa Denko (SDK) contracted to supply hard disks with the producer of helium-filled hard disk drives (HDD), and is going to supply the 3.5 inch aluminum-made hard disks of the eighth generation adopting a perpendicular magnetic recording system which SDK started to produce and sell ahead of other suppliers of the world in 2005. Users employ it with 10TB HDDs of the world’s highest storage capacity.

The demand for helium-filled HDDs is expected to increase in the data centers which will require a large-scale capacity as it can reduce power consumption in comparison with the conventional unsealed HDDs.

Helium has a gaseous density just one sevenths of air, which reduces resistance in high-speed disk revolutions and also excels in heat discharging action thanks to its high thermal conductivity. Thus, it is now used as a sealing gas for high-efficiency HDDs.

In addition, SDK is the world’s largest independent HD media supplier with a market share of about 25%.
