Global CCS Institute opened Japan CCS Forum 2016

On June 16, aiming for the introduction of CCS in Japan, “Japan CCS Forum 2016” was held at Bellsalle Kudan (Kudan-kita, Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo) sponsored by Global CCS Institute with the support of Japan Coal Energy Center and RITE* for the purpose to report and discuss the domestic and overseas policies and projects of CCS (Carbon Dioxide Capture and Storage). A total of about 140 persons participated in the forum including the forum members, representatives from the related industries, government authorities and universities or research institutes.
Note: *RITE stands for the Research Institute of Innovative Technology for the Earth.

Kyoji Yoshino (Director-general for Policy Planning) of Agency of Natural Resources and Energy of METI greeted as a guest, saying, “A target of 1.5℃ was posted in the Paris Agreement as adopted in the COP21 at the end of last year. In order to build up a low carbon society to attain the target, a technical innovation is necessary and CCS plays an important role in it. In our country we started the underground storage of CO2 in the Tomakomai Project in April, but measures against global warming should not be a matter of single country. It is important that all the countries of the world collaborate to build up a framework. Our country would like to co-operate for the efforts of the Global CCS Institute.”
