Foreign Technical Intern Trainees 2.3 times more since 5 years ago

According to the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare, the number of foreign technical intern trainees registered from November 2017 to October 2018 is recorded to have reached 308,489 which is 2.3 times more than the figures 5 years ago.

The technical intern trainee system is aimed to provide training in Japan for foreign laborers who are unable to learn techniques in their native countries so that they can bring back their acquired know-how. The training period is 5 years at longest.

In terms of nationality, Chinese had accounted for 70% most of all before, but decreased to 30% in 2018, while Vietnamese account for 50% instead. Indonesians increased from 2018 by 60% comparing with the previous year.

In terms of industrial segment, the largest share was taken by the manufacturing industry which took 29%. Above all the foodstuff industry accounted for 30%.
